Sleeping under a 300 year old bed.

Loreto is the oldest town in the Californias, one of the last spots of North America to finally, surely with regret, be conquered by the big ships, and all the mess. Loreto is close to 313 years old, after that came the mission of San Xavier. San Xavier, the mission, the church built by the Jesuit missionaries is still standing, Loreto`s is not.

Last Friday I didn´t had any clue the ages of this two towns, I just heard that San Xavier was a pretty old mission up in the mountains, on the Sierra de la Giganta, and that the fruit candy that San Xavier people made where amazing, this was enough for me to go. My stomach rules most of my important decisions, or at least I would like that. I must say that I had a free weekend so I decided to hitch hike, up the 40 km of high sierra rocky terrain that separate the peaceful beaches of Loreto, from the Mission. My day started early, I packed my sleeping bag, a sweatshirt, water, a cap, my cellphone with some songs, and money (I forgot my toothbrush), not even a book, what if I didn´t get a ride, I wasn´t going to walk all the way up with a heavy book on my back. Before starting my adventure I needed to stop at the clinic to get my stiches out, when I arrived there the nurse was laying on her ass and told me to get back on Sunday, I think she was chilling at the moment and didn´t want to move for a simple removing procedure, its not that I am paying her with my taxes or anything.

With stiches and my swollen purple eye, I started to walk to the highway, it wasn’t long till a big muscular gringo stop in his Cadillac escalade and gave me a ride just where the San Xavier road starts, exactly where it starts to go up the hill. I got down and started to walk, it was like 10 am and the sun was hitting hard. I put up my headphones and started to listen “Remember me as a time of the day”, by Explosions in the Sky, a song that I relate with taking a shower, and stepping on the cold water in the morning, so its kind of a refreshing song. I walked for about an hour and a half noticing spots on the mountains, good places to camp, to stop and have some water, places with a good shade, hills that I could climb for a better view… The scenery was vast, huge, not a single spot of humanity around, just the dirt road I was walking through. On my back I had the Sea of Cortez reflecting like a mirror in an amazing deep blue, everything else was rock and cactus, big tall cardones, and other dry bushes, I could hear birds everywhere and I decided I was going to keep walking until I got tired and if I feel like going back I was going to, if not, I will keep it on.

Suddenly ,like taken out from a movie three cars stop in front of me, they where 4 by 4 offroad cars, the kind they use in the Baja 1000 races. One of the guys with his white helmet and his full nomex suit told me to get in. I unhooked the window, that was really a net, and buckle up. The car had a gps and no more, and this guy was stepping hard on the accelerator, we where flying and of course not having a windshield made it all more exciting. I could see in between all the dirt, the cows this guy was avoiding on one side, and the cliffs and precipices on the other. We were getting up and up the cliff, very very fast, passing one curve after another. I can say I really enjoyed the adrenaline hit, but my stomach was having enough and I was also feeling dizzy, it was exactly like riding with el “Archiemen”, or even his mom or dad in the highway, where every second of the road you feel you are about to dye, but you are having a great time about it, somehow.

Finally I arrived, got the dirt of my head and arms, thanked the driver, who happened to be an Italian professional racer called Andrea, he even offered me to keep riding all the way south, but I was finally in San Xavier and I was getting that candy.

Wow, I was still feeling dizzy and it was like stepping out of a time machine, San Xavier is beautiful (this place close to Guatemala, jajaja) its one of those special places where time has stop by. Of all the towns I have been in Baja before, coastal ones are relatively young establishments, because people arrived there to fish them 50 or 60 years ago, or less, the old people are not even from those places, but in here it was different. The houses where beautiful, made out of rock, or adobe, I think, and all painted in white with a gray “Guardapolvo” in the bottom, and a palapa roof. All the houses, or the main houses of the town, where built infront of a broad road covered with pebbles that gets you all the way to the mission, the original church built 311 year ago, built out of the same rocks that cover the mountains that surround this valley, or this canyon, cause water runs through the middle, giving the church a especial aura that makes her fit entirely on this environment. This white road covered with pebbles has a bunch of rounded benches with orange trees in the middle, a perfecto place for the tired pilgrim to sit by the shade. I walked directly to the church, I wanted to feel the cold inside that rock cavern, and check out the windows that where ordered and delivered by ship all the way from Tlaxcala and where the first windows in the peninsula, or what about the golden retables that where also ordered and brought on a ship more that 300 years ago.

The places was fantastic, you could really feel that it had been there for a while, no wonder why thousands of people come here every year to celebrate San Francisco Xavier. After a while cooling down in the church I walked out, just thorough the roses, and like other 10 different kind of flowers that were planted at the front of the church, I walked around it and saw that the back of the church was full of gardens, I mean big gardens, and I started walking to take a look in between the date palm trees and the onion fields, the place was an Oasis, a skinny wound of green, almost like a scratch on the hard rock. On the back of the onion field I could see a big broad tree, not tall, but huge in proportion, a muscular trunk full of chunks of wood and scars, and bumps everywhere, also I could hear water running. Wow that thing was old, I thought. I walked by it and just by its foot, a small water channel used to water the fields was running, and the tree was absolutely the king of that land, and was getting all the water he wanted from it. At that moment I met Cirilo, Don Cirilo, the owner of the property, a 5th generation, AT LEAST, (he couldn’t really remember) man that was working his land just like his grandfather was when he reached 115 years old. His grandfather was born there, and had eaten the olives of that tree and drink the water of that channel, just as his grandson. “This place has a 130 population, in which we all know each other, Cirilo told me, a lot of people, like my grandfather, get to live after their hundred birthday. It is because of this water, of this clean air, of this olives, and of this soil”. He asked me If I knew how old the tree was, and he told me: This three was planted by the Jesuit missionaries before they built the church 311 years ago. That means this crooked and complicated old creatures is the oldest thing around, oldest than the oldest building in the Californias.

We talked for a while and before he left I asked him one thing “Can I sleep here under the tree, close to the channel, on its shade?” he said yes.

I got a spot to sleep, the hard part was done, now I needed to get some candy, and walk around the town. I have never seen so many different kinds of plants and flowers in my life, I couldn´t believe it. Every house was a botanical garden, and a jungle on itself. First you could see the olive trees, then the palm trees, then the fig trees, after that the chamomile flowers, the orange tree, the papayas, the mangos, la calabaza, and so many others that of course I had any idea what they were. I returned to the church and met Don Chuy, he was the one chosen by the community to be in charge of the church and the turists for that month. Probably it was even charging the foreigners, he didn’t charged me, I am not sure. We talked for a long time, about candy recipes and how he makes his favorite with just the skin of the orange, never the flesh. So the best way to do orange candy, was with its horrible untasty skin. He was sure about that, and he told me, he had to stay at the church for like an hour more, but after that he would take me back to try it.

At that moment the church was celebrating a Quinceañera with all the pink and all the cheesy ribbons you could imagine. I decided to skip it and curled under an orange tree on top of the church 300 year old stone fence. The heat was reaching its highest, but under the tree everything was calm and fress, I could see hummingbirds flying around me, and I can only hope my snoring wasn`t heard in the church, because I slept like a baby.

When Chuy was out he wake me up and we walked to his house, in there he sell me 1 kilo of candy but I open it and we ate like half of its sugary orangy amazingness just there, This Chuy really loved his candy. Then he offer me some goat cheese his neighbor made and he gave me another half a kilo piece of cheese. Uhmm combine with the candy, this cheese, was so tasty and different from the “local” queso Oaxaca they sell at Soriana that taste like pus jelly.

When I came out of the house it was starting to get dark, I walked around the town a little bit completely full, with still half a kilo of candy with me, jaja, sugarrr. I walked in a complete darkness to my tree, because the town has just a diesel electric plant, and this, thank God, makes the stars shine brighter instead of the televisions.

The amazing curly tree was there waiting, the night was cooling down up in the Sierra, I could see the moon and many many stars, in between the branches. I unrolled my sleeping bag, and draw a circle around it, so scorpions, and hopefully drunk rapists would avoid me, like I learned, in Oaxaca some years ago, preaching high in the Sierra, (ohh yeah, another story) I hook up some music on my cellphone, and started to listen a song that seemed to be written for this moment; “Glittering Blackness”, by Explosions in the Sky, under a 300 and counting olive tree.

My lucky day (sangre en el agua)

First watch this

http://i367.photobucket.com/albums/oo117/snatcherac/antonio.gif

(Sorry but I will have to leave the second part of the BLACK DESIERTO ZAGA POR LATER, this new story is needed right now)

........Someday in the beggining of march I am writing this sitting at the top of a dusty cliff just over where the waves crash, well they are not only regular pounding waves, they are the famous burrito couch puffy San Juanico wave.
The night is chill and calm not a single sound for miles, just the ocean, no moon up there, just the millions of eyes that shine like flowers on a dark garden. There is a night butterfly o una mantequilla que levita, walking on my sweatshirt and I have one eye shut completely bu a cotton patch, 3 stitches on my face and a swollen chickbone, that is probably going to start to hurt later in the night, just when I want to close my eyes on the tent and go to sleep, probably I am not going to sleep a lot tonight. And yet today it was my lucky day.
I arranged this trip with my friend Anaconda Johnson to come surf the burrito swell on an amazing swell and do some interviews for him, on some research he is doing, and for that he is paying for all the fish tacos and beer I can have. But I still need money, I have been expecting my first payment for my new job since a week ago, and I been living out of coins and a box of cereal, uhmm delicious cereal. Today in Consti, finally got my money.
Getting Lucky #1
Then we ride straight to la Purisima where they didnt had date bread, so maybe that was un lucky, but at least they had cold TECATES.Getting Lucky #2
After that we arrived to Sa
n Juanico the waves where there you could see from the beach that the power that came from all the way from Chile, was building up.I have to say at the beggining I struggle cause the waves where fast, and there where a lot of dudes out there in this increasinggly popular place, so if you want to find it go straight to Guatemala. Sudenly when i was getting tyred of getting smacked and really really cold whan Burrito decided to give me my "One way ticket to midnight" (for references watch SouthPark cat urine episode http://www.southparkstudios.com/episodes/164823/).
I have to say I have been in this ordeal of surfing for about a year, and I sucked until today where I finally surfed a good wave. Surfing, I think, Is not just getting on top of a board and shout like crazy, while you go straight, surfing, I think, is going un and down the wave, gaining speed, is working yourself to the maximum speed and basicly
telling that burrito "Hey you men, you are my bitch", jajaja. Getting lucky #3 (not me in the pic)
Ok so after that wave gave me my ticket I decided to carry my longboard to 1st poing where it was less crowded, first I thought I wasnt going to get anything but suddenly this bald guy back off and i was there getting my ticket. I promise I ride that beautiful shiny cadillac for about a minute when I reach almost the town on my wave I saw back at the little spots of people that were, where i started. Wow a long way, a long wave
Getting lucky #4
I have to say that after this my body forgot the cold, I was boiling and wanted more. I got there and after a few failures I got the best wave that has ever been riden, It was perfectly rounded and fat, with speed and height, I got there and dont know how I didnt fall from the board after standing and droping on the wall a couple of meters. The bald guy was infront of me on the same wave, but I manage to go up and down, up and accelerating, while waking or dancing on my board, going to the front, to the front all the way to the tip. It was gorgeus, and while I was approaching the beach the wave started to loose force and dissappear, the power ended and after been there like for a minute, I fell to the front, a second before my face touch the water the back of the board (I think) catapulted itself thanks to the leash or strap, that was holding my right leg, with all the momentum of the Pacific Ocean and hit my face like 1 cm down from my right eye. But not in the eye Getting lukcy #5It hurt like hell and I imediatly knew it was going to get worst. My eye felt weird and with my other eyw I just could see blood pouring down my arms, like if I was taking a shower with catsup. I put my right hand on top of my eye, I thought it had pop out and with my other eye I tried to swim out and get to the beach hoping someone would see me.
Somebody grab my shoulder and told me to seat down, he unhooked my surfboard and started asking me ?¿ to see if I knew where I was. I remember I was laughing a lot, while holding my eye from falling out. This guy, on his wetsuit, aparently was on the wave that was after mine, suddenly pops out, this huge (jajaja sounds bad) med kit, and tells me he is a kind of medic, I dont know what he meant by that. Meanwhile I am shaking, covered in blood and trying to hold my eye.
This guy clean my eye, (it wasnt out he told me) put some alcohol and a nice bandaid on it, and give me some painkillers and ask me if I was ok. Getting lucky #6
He just needed to give me a loly pup and I was set. After that we drive down the beach to my camping spot and I could hear other surfers making sounds like ohhhh, and ahhhh, and Iwas still wondering how I looked. I even heard a guy say, "hey Paquiao hit you man".
This time for the first time ever we are camping with Robin and Billie, this great old hippie couple from up california. They received me very worried and even Anaconda told me if I wanted to go back to La Paz to a plastic surgeon he was willing to take me a
t the momento.
I decided to go to the doctor on town, to get stiches and maybe get a chance tosurf again on saturday. Before leaving my almost grandma Robin gave me some delicious highbiskus tea and made me promise I was not going to eat anything in town, I had to come back because she was going to fix me dinner with her awesome organic veggies. By the way she is a chef.
>Getting lucky #7
Then we went to the Doctor this lady called Angelica and it turns out I met her before because last time with Mr.Mangina I was here and help here translate to a couple that had drop there baby to the floor.
This really nice doctor loved med and took good care of me and gave me 3 stiches and a nice smile all the time, and a huge patch.
Lucky #8
Then we drove back had some amazing hot frijoles with a million veggies in, some rice and cheese, and tortillas, all this with an amazing salad. Uhmm this day wasnt that bad.

............ Oh yeah, no more surfing for the weekend..........

Black Desierto part 1

I have to say that the reason for my lack of continuos writing is because everytime I want to sit down and write an idea I have on mind suddenly a rush of thoughts start to appear on my limited mind and then I become overwhelmed by it. Tonight I pretend to overcome that overwhelmation(this is a word look for it in, www.talktomyenglishprofessordontblameitonmestopcheckingmyspellingthisisjustahumbleblog.com) to talk about my past weekend and this past days.

Last wednesday I started to read "Voyage to the Center of the Earth", by Julio Verne, this is a book that had been stored in my shelf since those days when Branton was driving in his black mustang and getting all the chicks at the movie theater. Finally I grab it and started to read it, the book as you probably realized talks about this german guys that travel to the center of the earth through the crater of a Volcano in Iceland. The main character its a young boy that complains all through the book about the lack of light, the cold in Iceland, the rocks in the volcano... ... in other words he is a pussy and a pain in the ass. The other guy is his uncle a famous and stubborn geologist. This detail was actually pretty funny because on Thursday I got on a bus to Todos Santos, the reason I was going to this little town was because I wanted to meet with this guy that was going to give me some maps about the water system in Todos. When I arrived to his house it was as if I was the house of the character of the book, and old geologist, which passion was to talk about rocks and minerals.
Anyway after my meeting I went to my friend`s house where Paty and her kid where waiting for me.
We were going to spend the weekend away from the crazy people that where going to celebrate J.C.`s dead and resurection with the famous ritual of drunk driving like crazy. The plan was to drive to la Pastora a beatiful strech of sand, waves, pelicans, oasis, cactus... inthe middle of nowhere and stay there and relax, and chill.

Let just say that the house wasnt much, it was small, but it seemed like if it has been drop from the air because its completely sorrounded by thorns, cactuces, flowers, trees and that is the only thing that you can see from the house, it feel as if the desert was about to bite a chunk on you. My favorite ritual during the day was to get off the house on the little stretch road and walk to the beach, this was probably a 5 minutes walk that it took me like an hour. This place even though its dry on the outside its one of the few places where you can find ground water this, I belive, gives the place a special condition because I have never seem so many life, so many different kinds of plants here in Baja, so many birds, so many flowers, and fruits, and of course rattlesnakes. THere where places around this walk where you would be completely submerged in the Sonoran desert, not a single view of the beach, of the house, of the human civilization, it was so cool to walk everyday across this dusty jungle. During the nigh the show continued, the house best gadget, wasnt a flat screen tv, or a minibar full of beers (although that needs to be there also) the best was this amazing confy chair in the porch, where everynight I could sit down wearing my sleeping bag. I wish I could live inside it forever, eating some freshly homebaked bread with peanut butter and some tea while I read about the pussy and the center of the earth.

To be continued....

Thank you people that have been writing comments on my blog and facebook thanks for helping me realized I am not just writing to a shiny rectangle.

Finally Back

Sorry I haven´t been around for a really long time.

Wow, if I just start to think how much my life has changed in the past month I get dizzy.
Maybe that is the reason I haven´t write anything till now.
This is a fast account of what my life has become in the past month. The 27 of febraury I was happy working in San Carlos and suddenly I got an offer to work in La Paz, for and environmental education ong. This job I have been looking for it for a while, and so when they told me my first day was the 1st of March I started packing, well really I started washing, because It was my last chance of using a washing machine for free in a while. Now I pay 45 pesos just for my thongs, sorry my speedos, sorry sorry, my armani suits. jajaja, yeah right.

Well after that I left the peacefullness and the comfortable life I have been experiencing for more than a year, in beautiful Mag Bay. Maybe it has some trash around the beach, and there is just two bars in town, and both arent that cool, but I miss the sunsets every afternoon at dinner
I miss someone preparing dinner for me, and breakfast and lunch, and well, other stuff and people of course.
Now I am living with a friend, Itziar, Javi`s girlfriend. she was really nice offering a place to crash in La Paz, and its cool to have somewhere and someone to be in this town in this new city.
Our place is small, cheap, the sewer system doesnt quite work because the pipes are stucked with some gigantic roots. This roots I have to say are part of a Ficus tree that is growing and growing like a fucking sequoia in the desert, he just loves our pipes, uhmmm. Well what else, we own, one chair, no beds, a bucket, and some cooking stuff, like forks, ollas, sartenes, cutting boards... ... but not kitchen. Wait, wait, we didnt have a stove, so we were developing this new diet on amazing salads and cereal, that wasnt bad. but Now Itziar has got a stove and its really nice to be able to cook, and it has an oven in which we hope to do some cakes, and pies, and cookies, ohh yeah I want one.
Well I am proud because today I woke up early went for a ride on my bike, with a basket for groceries and stuff, I swear its manly, for you people that where imagining a pink stuff, and went to the ferreteria, the place you get tools and stuff. I borrowed some tools after explaining to the owner that I needed to cook a freaking pasta because I was craving it, and he was really nice about it
Then I went back to my house and started working on installing the thing, I got into a problem, the hose, that goes al the way to the gas tank was imposible to adjust to it, so I took a picture of it, so the guy cool see the kind it was, and I ride my bike, By this time I was still in my pijamas. The owner saw the picture on my cellphone and told me the problem was that, that specific thing was screwed the opposite way. So instead of screwing it to the right, or left, or whatever side it is, it was to the other way.
So I ride back and did it, it was easy, then I started to attach the other side, and after a few tries and two other visits to the guy, I was done. In the afternoon we had pasta, it was amazing, some flames came out of the back of the stove, and we still are figuring out why that happen, I just hope the house doesnt blow up, but the pasta, and the cooking felt really good. I dont actually miss frijoles and arroz.

Now I dont have the beautiful views of the bay in front of my house everyday, but I discover that If I climb to my roof, where we keep the compost box, that we created, and then jump to the neighbors roof, and then climb to his second floor, and sit on it, you have an awesome view of the horizon, just to the west,, just where the orange round one sits every afternoon in the waters of the Sea of Cortez, not bad, I hope the neighbor doesnt realize I am in his roof, while he is probably watching the WWF.

This weekend to Todos Santos, and next week maybe, if I am lucky I will be a fishermen for some days, getting extramoney and being in the water again, lets hope for that.

Earthquake or SONIC BOOOOOM

iTS 10,32 pm, I have just crawled out of bed to come and write in the computer room, in which the only sound that keeps me company is the sound of the everlasting (not really) energy expending plastic boxes.

Just at 10,13 pm I was resting myself in my bed, inside my blankets, protecting myself from the heavy wind that came from my, since the hurricane, broken window.
I was in the last page, in the last sentence of the book I was reading, "Touching Spirit Bear", that a nice lady gave to me, when suddenly it trembled, the entire world move and jump, as if it was choking to death, hoping to get some air before passing out. I have never felt that before, I believe me, being from Mexico City, I have experienced my good share of earthquakes, but this one was different, the windows where dancing like Shakira, and the whole building move from one side to the other, I've never felt something like this before, It felt Like if an space non identified aircraft has just landed, roughly, outside my house.
When everything stopped, the sensation was good, like if I was lucky to have survived a nuclear explosion, if that sensation really exists, and can be told.

At the moment I walk out of the house, kind of wondering if I was going to see some demolition job, or a UFO standing outside my house. Everybody in the neighborhood was out wondering what the hell had happen. Of course the jokes started, Anaconda shouted "sorry", for farting.

I Don't know what happened tonight, but the earth definitely shook itself some fleas or something, it felt good.

The feel of the water, the power of a swell

Today I went to the dunes.
The dunes is a sand bar infront of where I live in Magdalena Bay where the Pacific Ocean meets Land and hits it pretty hard creating in some especial ocations, this big, nicely form, chunky, wave.
DUring this day, we arrive there pretty early, driving in my friends Anaconda Johnson´s boat, we arrived there just at high tide, we park the boat in the bay side, the black inflatable, exmarine boat looked pretty sad and lonely, with out its normal bodyguard, Wanda, the blow up doll.
At high tide the waves at the beach, in the other side of the huge dunes, cover with coyote tracks, and dolphin skeletons, are just a big fat burrito, they never completely brake, they just go on an on, but at the perfect moment of the day, when the correct amount of force and water is approaching the beach, the waves formations were sweet like candybars. The waves where big, the waves where powerful, the waves kicked my ass, like never before, I was swallowing water, being hit with the zebra, red wood board, I was using, and no waves where surf at the moment, I was close to quitting when my friend Johnson, help me get a wave. At that point I started to paddle as fast as I could, hoping that the wave would give me my "One way ticket to midnight, heavy metal showdown" (for more references on the matter watch SouthPark episode on getting high with cat urine). I could feel the movement, I could see my board going faster and faster, and at that point I was going into this huge wave, this huge movement on water, crawling over the surface of the world, going forward, and with me on top.
It is hard to explain the feeling that you got when you are on a Wave, I dont know if I experience it more because I dont usually experience it, although I experience the feeling of going under a wave a lot, but the feeling of going on top is so full of energy, so peaceful, so fantastic, that its a kind of rush, you normally dont experience. Now that I read my description, I realize how lame it is compared, to that few seconds of glory in which I dominated the furious rage of the ocean. As my friend Anaconda says, its awesome to be on a wave, to imagine the power you are riding, imagining that, that force you are on, came all the way from the North Pole, and now you are on top of it, as a last ceremony, to honor this fantastic wave before its departure, before its final vogaye. Before its death against a sandy bar.
